"In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty...in the wisdom of uncertainty lies the freedom from our past, from the known, which is the prison of past conditioning. And in our willingness to step into the unknown, the field of all possibilities, we surrender ourselves to the creative mind that orchestrates the dance of the universe." - Deepak Chopra Center
For me, letting go and detaching from my desired outcome is a hard one—a really hard one. But, it's critical in your path to success. Did you know that wanting something too badly could actually be the reason that desire is not manifesting in your life?
If you've read my past articles, you know that I am a firm believer in your power to attract what you desire into your life by setting a positive intention and coupling that with an action plan and a willingness to work towards your goal. In other words, I genuinely believe you can attract whatever you want into your life. You have that power.
However, an often overlooked tool for achieving success is detachment. Think of detachment as a lack of fear and anxiety about achieving your goal. Wanting something but not needing it.
You probably have witnessed the opposite of detachment—attachment. Have you ever broken up with someone because you felt that person wanted you too much? Have you ever turned down a candidate for a job because they appeared too desperate for the job? You sensed that desperation, fear and anxiety linked to a person's goal.
Attachment to any desire is a matter of control. Attachment to something comes from a place of fear. You hold on to someone or to an idea so tightly because you might be scared of letting go. But what are you really scared of? For most, it is a fear of the unknown. The Deepak Chopra quote above, though, presents the unknown in a whole new light. The unknown is the field of infiniteness possibilities! The past is a prison of past conditioning. This quote has intensely affected my life. I used to be so scared of the unknown (and still struggle with this). Perhaps it was—and sometimes still is—because I forgot that the unknown might actually be better than the past! There is no need to fear the unknown and no need to control the future. And, let's be honest, you really can't.
So, that's what the law of detachment is really all about. It's all about letting go and trusting that the universe (God, whatever you believe), in its infinite wisdom, will deliver your desires when the time is right. And without detachment, you will have a tough time creating your dream life. Because if fear and anxiety are attached to your desires, it will only attract and breed more fear and anxiety.
What goal are you too attached to right now? Is it a new job opportunity? A raise? Getting married or having a family? Go ahead and try—let it go!
